Privacy policy

What we collect

A newsletter email, if you subscribe. When you sign up for The Octans Brief, we store the email address you enter and the time you subscribed. That is the whole subscriber record. It lives in our own database, on servers we operate — not in a third-party marketing platform.

Standard server logs. Like any web server, ours records requests — the page requested, the time, the requesting IP address — in ordinary server logs on our own infrastructure. Our API and feeds also rate-limit by IP address; those counts are held transiently in memory to enforce the limit and are not kept.

Aggregate readership counts. We count our own traffic, first-party and without cookies: when a page loads, our own server records the page, the time, the referring site, and a coarse device class (phone or desktop). To count readers without identifying them, we store a one-way hash derived from the connection that rotates every day — it cannot be reversed into an address, and it cannot connect your visit today to your visit tomorrow. Your IP address itself is never stored, browsers that send a Do-Not-Track or Global Privacy Control signal are not counted at all, and raw counting records are deleted within 180 days. No analytics vendor is involved; the numbers never leave our servers.

Aggregate reading behavior. To understand whether articles are actually read, the same cookieless counter also records, per page: how long the page was visibly open, how far down the page reading reached, and whether a source citation, ticker link, or share control was used — as a category, never the destination(we record “a source link was clicked,” not which one or where it led). These measurements ride the same daily-rotating hash, so they carry no identity, cannot follow you across days, and are deleted on the same 180-day schedule. They exist to answer questions like “do readers finish this article?” — in aggregate, about articles, never about you.

Reading the site requires no account, and we ask for nothing else. There is no sign-up wall, no profile, and no form on this site that asks for anything beyond that one optional email address.

Cookies

This site sets exactly one cookie, and readers never receive it: octans_admin, set only when a member of our staff signs in to the internal admin area. It is HTTP-only, expires after 12 hours, and exists solely to keep that staff session signed in. Browsing, reading, searching, and subscribing set no cookies at all.

There are no tracking cookies, no third-party analytics scripts, and no advertising or ad tech anywhere on this site. We do not build reader profiles, and we have no analytics vendor to share your behavior with. The one measurement we do — counting our own readership, described under What we collect — is first-party, cookieless, and incapable of following you from one day to the next.

What we do with your email

One thing: sending The Octans Brief, our research newsletter. The Brief has not launched yet — until it does, your address simply sits on the subscriber list, unused. We never sell your email address, and we never share it with anyone outside Octans Research.

Retention and deletion

We keep your email address until you ask us to remove it. To unsubscribe, or to have your record deleted entirely, email research@octanscap.com from the address in question and we will delete it. Server logs are operational records and are rotated in the ordinary course of running the site.

Children

This site publishes securities research and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from minors; if you believe a minor has subscribed, email us and we will delete the address.

Changes to this policy

If what we collect or how we use it changes, we will update this page and the Last updated date above first. The version on this page is always the one in effect.
